Karwa Chauth has its roots in northern India — Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh — and has since spread across North India as one of the most widely observed festivals for married women, symbolising devotion to a spouse's long life. It falls on Chaturthi, the fourth day after the full moon, in the Hindu month of Kartik, a few days before Diwali.
