Chhath Puja is a four-day festival dedicated to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya, observed with a strict nirjala fast and arghya offered to the setting and rising sun. The rituals need a very specific set of items, and most of them — bamboo soop and daura, sugarcane, seasonal fruit, thekua, earthen diyas — sell out or spike in price in the days just before the festival.

Chhath Puja is one of the oldest sun-worship traditions in India, rooted in Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand and now observed widely across Delhi NCR by the large Purvanchali community settled here. It falls on the sixth day after Diwali, in the Hindu month of Kartik, and unlike most festivals it has no idol worship — the sun itself, at both dawn and dusk, is the focus of the ritual. The fast is considered one of the most rigorous in the Hindu calendar: no water for nearly 36 hours across the middle two days.

In NCR, the festival has grown a visible public side alongside the private household one. Municipal corporations and RWAs across Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad and Delhi prepare ghats and society ponds weeks in advance, and the run-up sees a sharp, short spike in demand for soop, daura, sugarcane and thekua ingredients — which is exactly why pre-booking a kit ahead of the festival, rather than shopping for it in the last two or three days, tends to work out better on both price and availability.
